R2R Sports - Champion Lakes Event Recap

Updated: Jan 1, 2020

R2R Sports put on this awesome series of running events each year in Western Australia. There are 3 events in the series, starting in Rockingham, then moving to Champion Lakes and ending in Busselton. The distances offered for the first two events in the series are 5km, 10km and half marathon, with Busselton offering an additional marathon distance as a nice way to finish the series.

This year R2R Sports have added a 'Go Get 'Em' challenge where they challenge you to increase your distance over the course of the year with a short or long option. In the short option you do 5km in Rockingham, 10km in Champion Lakes and a half marathon in Busselton. In the long option you start with 10km in Rockingham, half marathon in Champion Lakes and a full marathon in Busselton. The Runnovation team attended the Champion Lakes event last weekend, one of the team did this as part of the short course for the go get 'em challenge.

The weather looked a little menacing at the start line, with a lot of grey clouds across the skyline. The weather held up nicely though, it was a lovely 16 degrees with very little wind and only the lightest sprinkling of rain. In total, 63 runners completed the half marathon, 46 completed the 10km and 35 completed the 5km.

The course is a flat, fast course around the lake in the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre, which was friendly to wheelchairs or prams. As always, it was a lovely welcoming atmosphere at the start line, finish line and during the event. One of our team members was running with someone doing their second ever 10km event and there was wonderful encouragement and support from other runners and volunteers on the course for her. As always with R2R Sports' events, the Champion Lakes event was well organised, the course was well marked, the aid stations were well stocked and the event was thoroughly enjoyable. Additionally, when compared to other organised running events happening in Western Australia, R2R Sports events are very reasonably priced.

If you have done a few running events before we know what you're thinking .... "WHAT ABOUT THE BLING?" Yes we got a lovely medal for finishing ... and it spins!! Our team members have decided to display our awesome R2R Sports race bling in our bib & medal holder and our display cubes (available from our online store).

If you are interested in registering for R2R Sports' events you are not too late! Registrations have just opened up for the Busselton event and we would love to see you there. Go to http://www.r2rsports.com.au/events/ to register or check out R2R Sports on Facebook for more information.
